Reading Scheme

Read Write Inc Literacy and Language is a complete literacy programme for children who can decode fluently and are working above a level 2A. It develops children’s comprehension, vocabulary, writing, critical thinking and discussion skills.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is a full support programme proven to help struggling readers in Years 5 and 6 gain a high reading age (NC level 4) quickly, and develop a love of reading.

In all Year groups across the school, the teachers read to their classes too, so the children get to know all sorts of stories, poetry and information books. They learn many more words this way and it also helps their writing.

Your child will return home with a library book, which is a book to share with / read to your child. In addition, If your child is in a Literacy and Language group, he / she will bring home an Oxford Reading Tree book or an independently chosen reading book. However, if your child is learning through the Read Write Inc Phonics programme, your child may bring home one of the following items.

Group A Sound writing review sheet Your child will bring home a new sheet five out of every six days. If your child comes home with this sheet, they will notcome home with a reading book. These are practise sheets that prepare your child for blending words and reading stories in later weeks.
Group B – C A red ditty sheet / book of short stories Your child will bring home a new ditty book every three to four days orin Reception a ditty sheet every day. These will be levelled at your child’s confidence level. Please encourage your child to read the ditty out loud and ask them questions about the text.
Group D – F Reading book Your child will bring home a new reading book every three to four days. One of the underpinning characteristics of Read Write Inc. is that children do not change their books daily. Instead, the books are read and re read to compound understanding and allow the children to feel successful as a reader. Please encourage your child to read the story out loud to you. Discuss the content of the story i.e. characters or theme and encourage imaginative play, linked to their current book or ditty if possible.
Group G – I Reading book Your child will bring home a new reading book every five to six days. One of the underpinning characteristics of Read Write Inc. is that children do not change their books daily. Instead, the books are read and re read to compound understanding and allow the children to feel successful as a reader. Please encourage your child to read the story out loud to you and discuss the content of the story.

With their home reader, please help your child to sound out the letters in words and then to ‘push’ the sounds together to make a whole word. Try not to refer to the letters by their names. Help your child instead to focus on the sounds.
