Reading and Writing

Read Write Inc. is a phonics based programme which teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension.   Through our half an hour sessions, children are taught the English alphabetic code, learning one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words.  Children then move on to learning to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

Our children experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky red’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice. They also practise handwriting every day: sitting at a table comfortably, learning correct letter formation and how to join letters speedily and legibly before using phonetic knowledge to help the children learn key words and spelling.

The programme is designed for Reception to Year 4 children as the main EYFS and KS1/2 early reading programme.  Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is then delivered through an intervention phonics programme for Upper Key Stage 2. Children learning English as an additional language also make speedy progress when learning to read with Read Write Inc. Phonics.

Children are grouped according to their reading progress and re-assessed in decoding and fluency every half term – they learn sounds and practise reading every day at exactly the right level.  Any children who need extra support to maintain progress will work with a teaching assistant for an extra 10 minutes a day on a 1:1 basis.

After the RWI lesson children will return to class for an English skills lesson with their class teacher which covers the English Curriculum.  Skills that are taught within these sessions are then consolidated during curriculum writing and a number of opportunities and experiences are planned throughout the week in order to produce high quality writing.
